The characteristic charge-transfer absorption bands of some para- as well as (1,2,4)cyclophanes as donors with 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) as acceptor have been determined in methylene chloride solution in the visible regions.The positions of λmax of the longest wavelength charge-transfer band, molar extinction coefficients, association constants and transition energies of the complexes formed have been determined spectrophotometrically.A comparison between the acceptor character of TCNQ and tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) as well as tetrahalo-1,4-benzoquinones was reported.The relative basicity of the electron donors under investigation has been discussed.
