The adducts of various α-dicarbonyl compounds with guanidine, O-methylisourea, acetamidine, or benzamidine are trapped by the formation of diphenylboron chelates. The crystalline chelates 8 resulting from the three-component reaction of an amidine derivative, an α-dicarbonyl compound, and oxybis(diphenylborane) confirm the bicyclic structure 1, which has been suggested to represent the constitution of the final product in the reversible modification of arginine-containing enzyme proteins by 1,2-diketones in borate buffer.
