Description
PROTOVERATRINE A is an alkaloid derived from Veratrum album, which yields colorless crystals when dissolved in ethanol. It is laevorotatory with specific optical rotation values in different solvents. PROTOVERATRINE A dissolves in sulfuric acid, resulting in a blue color. The alkaloid can form a complex with maleic acid, which also yields colorless crystals with a melting point of 241.5°C. Upon alkaline hydrolysis, it breaks down into protoverine, two moles of acetic acid, one mole of (-)-methylbutyric acid, and one mole of (+)-2-hydroxy-2-methylbutyric acid. It is commercially available under the brand name Protalba by Marion Merrell Dow.
