Cerivastatin sodium is a synthetic statin drug that belongs to the class of lipid-lowering agents. It functions as a competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme involved in cholesterol synthesis. However, it was withdrawn from the market in 2001 due to reports of severe muscle toxicity called rhabdomyolysis.
