Description

Ammonium hexafluorophosphate, also known as NH4PF6, is an off-white powdery compound with a variety of applications across different industries. It decomposes upon heating before melting and has a solubility of 74.8% w/v in water at 20°C. Additionally, it is very soluble in Me2CO, MeOH, EtOH, and MeOAc, and is decomposed by boiling mineral acids.

Uses

Used in Chemical Synthesis:
Ammonium hexafluorophosphate is used as a starting material for the preparation of other hexafluorophosphates, as well as for the synthesis of organometallic compounds, particularly rhodicinium hexafluorophosphate, which has inert and non-coordinating counter ions.
Used in Polymer Electrolytes:
Ammonium hexafluorophosphate is used in the synthesis of polyethylene oxide (PEO) based highly conductive non-aqueous polymer gel electrolytes, which exhibit high conductivity (>10-2 S/cm at 25°C).
Used in Metal Complex Preparation:
Ammonium hexafluorophosphate (NH4PF6) can be used as a precursor for the preparation of metal complexes, specifically iridium and rhodium complexes.
Used in Flame Retardant Materials:
Ammonium hexafluorophosphate is utilized in the production of flame retardant cellulose-based materials.
Used in Cyclic Salts Synthesis:
It is also used for the synthesis of cyclic amidinium and iminium ammonium hexafluorophosphate salts.
Used in Catalyst Preparation:
Ammonium hexafluorophosphate is employed in the preparation of polymer-supported iridium isomerization catalysts for the selective trans isomerization of aryl allylic derivatives.
Used as a Preservative:
Ammonium hexafluorophosphate is used as a preservative in various applications.

Purification Methods

It crystallises from H2O in square plates and decomposes on heating before melting. Its solublility in H2O at 20o is 74.8% w/v, and it is very soluble in Me2CO, MeOH, EtOH and MeOAc but is decomposed by boiling mineral acids.
