General Description
4-Methoxycoumarin, also known as methoxsalen, is a naturally occurring compound found in the leaves and roots of various plants such as the Ammi majus. It is commonly used in the medical field as a photosensitizing agent, particularly in phototherapy treatments for skin disorders such as psoriasis and vitiligo. When exposed to ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation, 4-methoxycoumarin binds to DNA and disrupts its replication, leading to the death of rapidly dividing cells. Due to its ability to sensitize skin to light, 4-methoxycoumarin is also used in combination with ultraviolet light in some cancer treatments to target and destroy malignant cells. Additionally, it has been studied for its potential as an antibacterial and antioxidant agent, with promising results in inhibiting the growth of certain bacteria and scavenging free radicals.
