General Description
Physalaemin is a bioactive peptide derived from the venom of the South American red-legged frog, Physalaemus nattereri. It belongs to the tachykinin family of neuropeptides and has a similar structure to that of other tachykinins like substance P, neurokinin A and B. Physalaemin has various physiological effects such as vasodilation, contraction of smooth muscles, hypotension, salivation, and increased vascular permeability. This chemical also shows potent effects on the cardiovascular system, respiratory system and gastrointestinal tract. Despite its powerful actions, physalaemin is not toxic to humans.
