25639-42-3 Usage
Description
METHYLCYCLOHEXANOL is a colorless, viscous liquid with a menthol-like odor. It is less dense than water and has a flash point of 136°F. Its vapors are heavier than air, and it may be toxic if ingested. It is primarily used as a solvent and in the production of soaps and detergents.
Uses
Used in Chemical Industry:
METHYLCYCLOHEXANOL is used as a solvent for cellulose esters and ethers, as well as for lacquers. It is also utilized as an antioxidant in the lubricant industry and serves as a blending agent for special textile soaps and detergents.
Used in Textile Industry:
In the textile industry, METHYLCYCLOHEXANOL is used as a blending agent in textile soaps, contributing to the production of detergents with enhanced properties.
Used in Lubricant Industry:
METHYLCYCLOHEXANOL is employed as an antioxidant in the lubricant industry, where it helps to extend the life and improve the performance of lubricants.
Used in Coatings and Paints Industry:
As a solvent for lacquers, METHYLCYCLOHEXANOL is used in the coatings and paints industry to facilitate the application and drying process of various types of lacquers.
General Chemical Properties:
METHYLCYCLOHEXANOL is a colorless, viscous liquid with an aromatic, menthol-like odor. It is combustible and has a weak odor threshold of 490 ppm, which is higher than the Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL).
Production Methods
Methylcyclohexanol is produced by hydrogenating m- and
p-cresols. Methylcyclohexanol can exist as three
separate isomers, ortho, meta, and para, or as a mixture of
isomers. The commercial product consists essentially of the
meta and para isomers. Methylcyclohexanol is used as a
solvent in lacquers, a blending agent in textile soaps, and an
antioxidant in lubricants. In addition, methylcyclohexanol
dissolves gums, oils, resins, and waxes.
Air & Water Reactions
Flammable. Soluble in water.
Reactivity Profile
METHYLCYCLOHEXANOL is incompatible with the following: Strong oxidizers .
Hazard
Toxic by ingestion. Eye and upper respira-tory tract irritant.
Health Hazard
May cause toxic effects if inhaled or absorbed through skin. Inhalation or contact with material may irritate or burn skin and eyes. Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.
Health Hazard
Methylcyclohexanol is mildly toxic. Inhalationmay produce mild irritation of the eyesand the respiratory system, and headache.Studies in rabbits showed that this compoundcould cause rapid narcosis and convulsion atsublethal doses. The minimum lethal dose byoral administration was 2000 mg/kg. Severeexposure may produce narcosis in humans.Skin absorption may cause dermatitis.
Fire Hazard
HIGHLY FLAMMABLE: Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back. Most vapors are heavier than air. They will spread along ground and collect in low or confined areas (sewers, basements, tanks). Vapor explosion hazard indoors, outdoors or in sewers. Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard. Containers may explode when heated. Many liquids are lighter than water.
Safety Profile
Moderately toxic by
ingestion and subcutaneous routes. Mildly
toxic by skin contact. Human system effects
by inhalation: antipsychotic, unspecified
liver and kidney effects. Combustible when
exposed to heat, flame, or oxidizers. On
heating it emits acrid fumes; can react with
oxidizing materials. To fight fire, use alcohol
foam, CO2, dry chemical.
Potential Exposure
Methylcyclohexanol is used as a lacquer solvent; as a blending agent in textile soaps and as an
antioxidant in lubricants.
Shipping
UN2617 Methylhexylhexanone, flammable,
Hazard Class: 3; Labels: 3-Flammable liquid.
Incompatibilities
Vapors may form explosive mixture with
air. Incompatible with oxidizers (chlorates, nitrates, peroxides, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, etc.); contact may cause fires or explosions. Keep
away from alkaline materials, strong bases, strong acids,
oxoacids, epoxides. Attacks some plastics, rubber, and
coatings.
Waste Disposal
Dissolve or mix the material
with a combustible solvent and burn in a chemical incinerator equipped with an afterburner and scrubber. All federal,
state, and local environmental regulations must be
observed
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 25639-42-3 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 2,5,6,3 and 9 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 4 and 2 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 25639-42:
(7*2)+(6*5)+(5*6)+(4*3)+(3*9)+(2*4)+(1*2)=123
123 % 10 = 3
So 25639-42-3 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
