Phenyl vinyl sulphone, 1, reacts, in the presence of concentrated aqueous sodium hydroxide and tetrabutylammonium bromide as a catalyst (phase-transfer catalysis, PTC), with alcohols, 2, and carbon tetrachloride to give 2-alkoxy-1,1-dichloroethyl sulphones, 3, with good yields; acrylonitrile, 4, forms the mixture of the products 5-8.
