A new dimethyl 2,7-dichloro-9-fluorenyl phosphonate carbanion (2) has been generated and reacted with a series of aromatic aldehydes to give 9-arylidene-2,7-dichlorofluorenes (4a-r) in good yields.The reaction of 2 with isophthalaldehyde and terephthalaldehyde give 1,3-bis(2,7-dichloro-9-fluorenylidene)xylene (4t), respectively.The structural assignments of the phosphonate (1) and the resulting products are based on spectral data.The phosphonate shows a good antibacterial activity in soil.

(2,7-Dichlorofluorenylidene)triphenylphosphonium ylid (2), a new phosphonium ylid, has been synthesized by the action of ethanolic sodium ethoxide on its precursor (2,7-dichlorofluorenyl)triphenylphosphonium bromide (1).It reacts with a series of substituted benzaldehydes (3a-n) to give 9-substituted-benzylidene-2,7-dichlorofluorenes (4a-n) in 45-80 percent yields.A similar reaction of 2 with furfural and cinnamaldehyde gives 9-furfurylidene-2,7-dichlorofluorene (4o) and 9-cinnamylidene-2,7-dichlorofluorene (4p)in good yields.The reaction of 2 with isophthaldehyde and terephthaldehyde gives 9(m-formylbenzylidene)-2,7-dichlorofluorene (4q) and 9-(p-formylbenzylidene)-2,7-dichlorofluorene (4r) or 2,2',7,7'-tetrachloro-isophthalal-9,9-difluorene and 2,2',7,7'-tetrachloro-terephthal-9,9'-difluorene respectively depending upon the reaction conditions.
