Heating of α-acyl-γ-butyrolactones 1 with 2-(2,6-dihalogenophenylimino)imidazolidines 5 in HMPT unexpectedly leads to 7-halogeno-2,6-dihydro-4-alkyl-5,6-ethano-1H-diazepinobenzimidazoles 7 in low yields.The structures of 7 are derived from spectroscopic data, oxidative degradation to benzimidazole derivative 9 and an X-ray structure analysis.A possible pathway for the formation of 7 is discussed.
