General Description
(5beta,7alpha,12alpha)-7,12-Dihydroxychol-3-en-24-oic acid methyl ester, also known as ursodiol, is a bile acid derivative that is used in the treatment of certain liver and gallbladder conditions. It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver and by dissolving gallstones. Ursodiol is also used to prevent gallstones in patients who are undergoing rapid weight loss or have undergone gastric bypass surgery. Additionally, it has been studied for its potential effects on other conditions such as primary biliary cholangitis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Ursodiol is available in both oral and injectable forms and is generally well tolerated with few adverse effects.
