Cresol, also known as cresylic acid, is a chemical compound obtained from petroleum or coal tar, consisting of three stereoisomers (molecules with a similar type and count of atoms but with distinct atom arrangements). Each isomer is highly toxic when exposed to high concentrations, while in low concentrations, they act as effective antiseptics and disinfectants. Cresol is an essential constituent of creosote, a wood preservative obtained through distillation as a by-product of coal tar.
