Description

Cresol, also known as cresylic acid, is a chemical compound obtained from petroleum or coal tar, consisting of three stereoisomers (molecules with a similar type and count of atoms but with distinct atom arrangements). Each isomer is highly toxic when exposed to high concentrations, while in low concentrations, they act as effective antiseptics and disinfectants. Cresol is an essential constituent of creosote, a wood preservative obtained through distillation as a by-product of coal tar.

Uses

Used in Antimicrobial Applications:
Cresol is used as an antiseptic and antimicrobial preservative for its ability to inhibit the growth of microorganisms and prevent infections.
Used in Wood Preservation Industry:
Cresol is used as a key component in creosote, a wood preservative that protects wood from decay and insect infestation.
Used in Photographic Development Materials:
Cresol is used in the production of photographic development materials, contributing to the process of image formation on photographic film or paper.
Used in Explosives Production (m-Cresol):
m-Cresol, one of the Cresol isomers, is used in the production of explosives due to its reactivity and stability.
Used in Food Industry (as a precursor for BHT):
Cresol can be transformed into butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), an essential antioxidant used in the food industry to extend the shelf life of various products by preventing oxidation.

Physical and Chemical Properties

Cresol has a molecular weight of 108.14 g/mol and an exact mass of 216.115 g/mol, which is also its monoisotopic mass. It has a density of 1.04 and a final boiling point of 820 C. It has a topological surface area of 40.5 A^2, a complexity of 134 units and a heavy atom count of 16.

Precautions

Cresol is harmful when inhaled, ingested or when it comes into contact with the skin, it may result in acute nasal, oral and dermal irritation. It may cause acute eye damage and skin burns/irritation. It may also influence genetic defects and it has long-lasting hazardous effects on the environment.

Safety Statements

If the compound comes into contact with one’s eyes, they should rinse it off thoroughly with plenty of water before consulting a doctor. One should always wear protective gear when handling the product. It is also essential to avoid exposure or to seek special instruction prior to handling the compound.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 84989-04-8 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 8,4,9,8 and 9 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 0 and 4 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 84989-04:
(7*8)+(6*4)+(5*9)+(4*8)+(3*9)+(2*0)+(1*4)=188
188 % 10 = 8
So 84989-04-8 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
