Description
TOLU BALSAM is a resinous material obtained from Myroxylon samum, a tree native to South America, particularly in regions like the Magdalena River Valley and Nueva Granada in Venezuela. It is a viscous, pale-yellow to light-orange oil with a sweet, resinous, and long-lasting odor reminiscent of hyacinth. The balsam is produced by extracting the plant exudate from incisions made on the trunk, which is then collected in cups placed at different heights along the trunk. The balsam is a semisolid plastic mass, brown or brownish-yellow, and has an agreeable, sweet, and persistent odor similar to vanilla. TOLU BALSAM is known for its fixative properties in perfumery and contains a fairly large amount of benzyl and cinnamyl esters of benzoic and cinnamic acid.
Uses
Used in Perfumery:
TOLU BALSAM is used as a perfume fixative for its ability to enhance and prolong the scent of fragrances. Its sweet, resinous, and long-lasting odor makes it an ideal ingredient in creating lasting and pleasant fragrances.
Used in Soap Perfumery:
TOLU BALSAM is used as a fixative in soap perfumery to maintain the scent of soaps and ensure that the fragrance lasts longer on the skin.
Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
TOLU BALSAM is used as a vehicle for cough mixtures, serving as an expectorant to help clear mucus from the respiratory tract and provide relief from coughs and congestion.
Used as an Antiseptic:
TOLU BALSAM possesses antiseptic properties, making it useful for treating minor cuts, scrapes, and wounds to prevent infection and promote healing.
Preparation
By the tapping of the tree. M. balsamum L. Harms (Guenther, 1952).
Safety Profile
A mild skin irritant. When heatedto decomposition it yields toxic and irritating fumes andsmoke.
Metabolism
The absorption and excretion of balsams such as balsam tolu has been reviewed by LeNouene (1966). Benzoic and cinnamic acids, which are major components of balsam tolu, are excreted in the urine, chiefly as hippuric acid.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 9000-64-0 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 9,0,0 and 0 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 6 and 4 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 9000-64:
(6*9)+(5*0)+(4*0)+(3*0)+(2*6)+(1*4)=70
70 % 10 = 0
So 9000-64-0 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
