History

Formaldehyde was first reported by the Russian chemist Aleksandr Butlerov (1828-1886), but it was conclusively identified by August Wilhelm von Hofmann.

Safety

Poison by intravenous route. Moderately toxic by ingestion and subcutaneous routes. An experimental teratogen. Other experimental reproductive effects. A skin irritant. Very reactive with F2. See also SULFONATES. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of SOx.
