Xylyl bromide (CAS NO.35884-77-6) was used as a tear gas in World War I , and its first effective use in battle is dated to August 1914, in the battle of Ypres, when the French used tear gas grenades with xylyl bromide on Germans. On January 30, 1915, it was used against Russians.
