  • Impact of surface modification of CHABAZITE (cas 12251-32-0) on the sorption of iodine and molybdenum radioisotopes from liquid phase

The negatively charged surface of CHABAZITE (cas 12251-32-0) reduces its efficiency for the sorption of anionic species of radionuclides due to the repulsion force between the anionic species and the negative charge of chabazite surface. Therefore, this work focused on the modification of chabazite using N-methylene aniline to produce Ch-NMA composite for the sorption of 131I and 99Mo, as anionic species of radionuclides, from the liquid phase. 131I and 99Mo were utilized as surrogates for the long-lived 129I and 93Mo, respectively. They are also homologs of superheavy elements such as seaborgium (Sg) and tennessine (Ts). A comparative sorption investigation of natural chabazite and Ch-NMA composite was achieved using the batch technique. The investigation revealed that the percent uptake of 131I and 99Mo radionuclides, at pH value of 3.0 and room temperature (25 °C), onto natural chabazite was very low (<15%), while that onto Ch-NMA was found to be 89.5 and 75.1%, respectively. This illustrates that the modification of chabazite by N-methyl aniline improved the sorption properties of natural chabazite toward the anionic species. The sorption process is kinetically fast since the equilibrium was reached within only 30 min. The sorption capacity of Ch-NMA was compared to that of other sorbents gained in the literature, the results demonstrated that Ch-NMA is the most promising sorbent with the capacity of 35.4 and 29.7 mg/g for 131I and 99Mo, respectively, at room temperature and pH 3.0. The obtained results could also be useful for the upcoming experiments studies on Ts and Sg.
