This paper demonstrates a new protection technique of nano zerovalent iron (NZVI) by using ethylenediamine (ED) and Diethylenetriamine (cas 111-40-0) (DETA) as a protective shell in order to prevent the oxidation process. Newly prepared nano sorbent was characterized and applied as efficient adsorbents for zinc(II) and cobalt(II) removal and their radioactive isotopes from aqueous solutions. TEM investigations showed that the prepared sorbents particles are in nano scale range; 7–10 nm and 24–50 nm, respectively. The thermal stability was examined using TGA. Adsorption efficiencies of these nanosorbents were investigated under different experimental conditions such as pH, shaking time, sorbent dose and metal ion concentration. The obtained results showed that the new sorbents exhibit high adsorption capacities toward zinc and cobalt; 7000 and 2150 μmol g−1 with NZVI-Ethylenediamine (NZVI-ED), and 2700 and 4100 μmol g−1with NZVI-Diethylenetriamine (NZVI-DETA), respectively. In addition to Kinetics and adsorption isotherm study were applied to this work, Zn(II) and Co(II) was found to obey pseudo-second order model using NZVI-ED and NZVI-DETA nanosorbent which indicates that the reaction is more inclined towards chemisorption. Co(II) obey a Langmuir case using NZVI-ED and NZVI-DETA, Zn(II) obey Langmuir with NZVI-ED and obey Freundlich with NZVI-DETA. Applications using the prepared nanosorbents were tested for removal of a mixture of zinc and cobalt simultaneously from water and same technique used for removal of their radioactive isotopes. The adsorption efficiency of the prepared materials which evaluated by a microcolumn technique yields a high adsorption capacity of zinc and cobalt and their radioactive isotopes with removal percentage exceed 90%.
