10048-13-2 Usage

Description

Sterigmatocystin is a mycotoxin produced by several species of Aspergillus, structurally related to Aflatoxin. It is a potent carcinogen, mutagenic, teratogenic, and lethal to various organisms. Sterigmatocystin has been shown to inhibit RNA synthesis, covalently bind to DNA, uncouple oxidative phosphorylation, and inhibit acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) with selectivity for the ACAT2 isoenzyme.

Uses

Used in Research and Development:
Sterigmatocystin is used as a research tool for studying its toxicological effects and mechanisms of action. It helps in understanding the impact of mycotoxins on cellular processes and their potential role in cancer development.
Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
Sterigmatocystin is used as a compound of interest in the pharmaceutical industry for its potential applications in drug development, particularly in the area of cancer therapeutics. Its ability to inhibit certain enzymes and bind to DNA makes it a valuable compound for further research and development.
Used in Food Safety and Contamination Control:
Sterigmatocystin is used as a reference mycotoxin in the food industry to monitor and control food and grain contamination. Its presence in Aspergillus species necessitates the development of strategies to prevent contamination and ensure food safety.
Used in Toxicology Studies:
Sterigmatocystin is used as a model compound in toxicology studies to investigate the effects of mycotoxins on various organisms, including rats and chick embryos. These studies contribute to the understanding of the toxicological properties of similar compounds and their potential impact on human health.

Hazard

Possible carcinogen; tumorigen; poison; mutagen; causes necrosis of the liver and kidney, and an inhibitory effect on orotic acid incorporation into nuclear RNA.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Initiates lung and liver tumors under experimental conditions.

Safety Profile

Confirmed carcinogen with experimental carcinogenic and tumorigenic data. Poison by ingestion and intraperitoneal routes. Human mutation data reported. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.

Purification Methods

It crystallises from amyl acetate, Me2CO or EtOH and sublimes in vacuo. It has UV max at 208, 235, 249 and 329nm (log 4.28, 4.39, 4.44 and 4.12). [UV: Bullock et al. J Chem Soc 4179, 1962, UV, IR: Holker & Mulheirn J Chem Soc, Chem Commun 1576, 1576 1968, Birkinshaw & Hammady Biochem J 65 162 1957.] This mycotoxin induces bone marrow changes in mice [Curry et al. Mutation Res 137 111 1984]. [Beilstein 19/10 V 575.]

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 10048-13-2 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 1,0,0,4 and 8 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 1 and 3 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 10048-13:
(7*1)+(6*0)+(5*0)+(4*4)+(3*8)+(2*1)+(1*3)=52
52 % 10 = 2
So 10048-13-2 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
