Description

Uranyl nitrate, also known as uranium nitrate, is a yellow crystalline solid that is soluble in water, alcohol, and ether. It is produced by dissolving uranic oxide in nitric acid and is known for its hexahydrate form, which is a yellow crystalline solid with an orthogonal crystal structure. It has a density of 2.81 g/cm3, is hygroscopic, melts at 60°C, and decomposes at 118°C. Its chemical properties include being a yellow, rhombic crystal.

Uses

Used in Uranium Extraction:
Uranyl nitrate is used as a source of uranium dioxide, which is extracted into nonaqueous solvents for various applications in the nuclear industry.
Used in Photography:
Uranyl nitrate has been used in the printing process of photography. It was first suggested by C. J. Burnett in 1855 and patented by Niépce de St. Victor in 1858. The process involved floating paper on a uranyl nitrate solution, exposing it under a negative in the sun, and developing the image using a solution of silver nitrate or gold chloride.
Used in Printing-Out Emulsions:
Uranyl nitrate is used in printing-out emulsions, which are used to create photographic prints without the need for development.
Used in Toning Prints and Intensifying Negatives:
Uranyl nitrate is used with potassium ferricyanide for toning prints and intensifying negatives, enhancing the contrast and quality of the final image.
Used in Uranium/Silver Gaslight Papers:
Uranyl nitrate is used with silver nitrate for making uranium/silver gaslight papers, which were used in early photographic processes.
Used in Collodion Process:
A process patented in 1864 by Jacob Wothly called for adding uranyl nitrate and silver to collodion, which was then applied to paper. The Wothlytype was a printing-out process that utilized uranyl nitrate in its formulation.

Preparation

Uranyl nitrate is obtained as an intermediate in recovering uranium from its minerals. The compound can be prepared by reacting triuranium octaoxide, U3O8, with nitric acid. It is separated and purified by extraction with ether.
