The PMR spectra of solutions of ethyl o-hydroxybenzoylacetate, p-hydroxybenzoylacetate, and o-methoxybenzoylacetate in tetrachloromethane and deuterated chloroform, acetone, acetonitrile, and dimethylformamide were investigated.Ethyl o-hydroxybenzoylacetate is only observed in the ketone form in all the solvents. The tautomeric composition of ethyl p-hydroxybenzoylacetate and o-methoxybenzoylacetate was determined. The intramolecular hydrogen bond between the phenolic hydroxyl group and the benzoylcarbonyl group hinders enolization of the latter.
