119911-69-2 Usage

Description

(+)-ALPHA-HCH, also known as alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane, is a chemical compound that is a byproduct of the pesticide lindane. It is a crystalline solid that is highly toxic and persistent in the environment. Classified as a persistent organic pollutant (POP), it has been banned or heavily restricted in many countries due to its harmful effects on human health and the environment. Known to bioaccumulate in the food chain, (+)-ALPHA-HCH has been linked to a range of health issues, including neurological and developmental disorders. Despite being banned in many parts of the world, its persistence in the environment continues to pose a threat to ecosystems and human health.

Uses

Given the highly toxic and persistent nature of (+)-ALPHA-HCH, it is not intended for any beneficial applications. However, it is important to mention its historical use and the ongoing efforts to mitigate its harmful effects:
Used in Pesticide Production (Historically):
(+)-ALPHA-HCH was previously used as a byproduct in the production of the pesticide lindane. It was employed for its insecticidal properties in agriculture and various other applications to control pests.
Used in Environmental Mitigation Efforts:
(+)-ALPHA-HCH is now the focus of environmental cleanup and remediation efforts. It is used as a reference point for monitoring and managing the presence of POPs in the environment to protect ecosystems and human health. Efforts include the development of strategies for the detection, containment, and removal of this pollutant from affected areas.
It is crucial to emphasize that the primary concern regarding (+)-ALPHA-HCH is its management and reduction of its presence in the environment rather than its application for any beneficial purposes.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 119911-69-2 includes 9 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 6 digits, 1,1,9,9,1 and 1 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 6 and 9 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 119911-69:
(8*1)+(7*1)+(6*9)+(5*9)+(4*1)+(3*1)+(2*6)+(1*9)=142
142 % 10 = 2
So 119911-69-2 is a valid CAS Registry Number.

Study of sorption, biodegradation and isomerization of HCH in stimulated sediment/water system

Wu,Xu,Schramm,Kettrup

, p. 1887 - 1894 (1997)

This paper reported the sorption, biodegradation and isomerization of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) in laboratory sediment/water system under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. The effect of organic nutrient addition to the sorption of HCH was also investigated. It indicates that HCH is highly adsorbed on sediments under both conditions. During the tests, the biodegradation and isomerization of HCH were dramatically speeded up after organic nutrient additions, especially in the case of the observation under aerobic condition. It was found, β-HCH was the most persistent in the environment, that is due to the isomerization of α-HCH in a big amount to β-HCH, besides its chemical stability.
