The preparation method of the 3-bromomethyl-2-chloro-4-methylsulfonylbenzoic acid comprises the following steps: by taking 3-methyl-2-chloro-4-methylsulfonylbenzoic acid as a raw material, hydrobromic acid as a brominating agent and hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizing agent, carrying out heating reflux reaction in an organic solvent in the presence of an initiator to prepare the 3-bromomethyl-2-chloro-4-methylsulfonylbenzoic acid. According to the method, not only is the increase of production steps avoided, but also the generation of wastewater is reduced, and the production cost is reduced. According to the invention, the yield and the purity of the obtained compound benzoyl cyclohexanedione herbicide intermediate 3-bromomethyl-2-chloro-4-methylsulfonyl benzoic acid shown in the formula (2) are relatively high; the used raw materials are safer to a human body; the whole process is safer, more convenient and low in cost; and part of reaction materials can be recycled, so that the cost is further reduced, and the method is more environment-friendly.
