Starting from 2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'-binaphthyl-3,3'-dicarboxylic acid (1) the optically active aldehydes 5 and 6, analogues of salicylaldehyde, are synthesized.Furthermore, the optically active 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-dicarbaldehyde (9) is prepared from 2,2'-dimethyl-1,1'-binaphthyl (7).Reaction of the aldehydes 5, 6, and 9 with amines and amino alcohols gives the corresponding Schiff bases, which serve as cocatalysts in the copper-catalysed enantioselective cyclopropanation of styrene with ethyl diazoacetate.Optical yields come up to 40percent ee. - Key Words: Binaphthalenes / Cyclopropanation / Transition-metal catalysis
