The two-step synthesis of acetyldehydrorishitinol (2), a sesquiterpenic stress metabolite produced by fungus-infested tubers of white potato (Solanum tuberosum Linn.) is described.Metal-ammonia reduction of 2-acetyl-4,8-dimethylnaphthalene (6) gives the corresponding 1,4-dihydro derivative (10) which on reaction with methylmagnesium iodide, followed by quenching with Ac2O-NaOAc affords 2.Quenching of a Grignard reaction complex of the type R1R2R3COMgX, with Ac2O-NaOAc, provides the tertiary acetates in situ in a one-pot procedure.
