The reaction of dimethoxymethane with styrene and trans-β-methylstyrene, catalyzed by boron trifluoride etherate, leads to the formation of 1,3-dimethoxy-1-phenylpropane and 2-methyl-1,3-dimethoxy-1-phenylpropane respectively. α-Methylstyrene forms a certain amount of the addition product, while the main reaction is polymerization. cis-β-Methylstyrene does not react under these conditions.Quantumchemical calculations show that the planar conformation is unfavorable for α- and cis-β-methylstyrenes
