Employing Triton X-100 as a surfactant, the tert-butyl hydroperoxide-mediated dioxygenation of styrene with molecular oxygen and N-hydroxyphthalimide was achieved in water at room temperature, providing the corresponding dioxygenated products in 9–93% yield. This facile method is eco-friendly, feasible on gram scale, and applicable to a wide range of styrene derivatives with a variety of functional groups.

The preparation method comprises the following steps: uniformly mixing a cobalt catalyst, a styrene compound, N - hydroxyphthalimide and an organic solvent, carrying out stirring reaction under an oxygen condition, separating and purifying after reaction, and obtaining a styrene double oxidation product. The cobalt catalyst is at least one of cobalt chloride or cobalt chloride hexahydrate. To the invention, the styrene compound and N -hydroxyphthalimide are taken as raw materials, styrene double oxidation is realized under the catalysis of transition metal cobalt, and the method is simple in process, mild in reaction condition, high in selectivity, high in yield and low in catalyst cost. The product is an important synthetic intermediate, can be used for preparing phenyl ethylene glycol, α - oxoacetophenone and other products, and is further applied to the fields of spice, medicine synthesis, pesticide chemical and coating dye synthesis and the like.
