Conversion of o,β-dinitrostyrenes to indoles with a range of reducing agents showed that sodium borohydride in the presence of palladium charcoal has the merit of convenience though slightly higher yields were obtained with classical reducing agents. 4,7-Dimethoxyisatin and 5-methoxyisatin gave the 4,7-dihydroxy- and 5-hydroxy-3,3-diphenyloxindole, respectively, on treatment with aluminium chloride.Oxidation of the oxindoles gave oxindole quinones.
