The insertion of sulfur trioxide into the molecule of S-methyl benzenethiosulfonate at room temperature in the presence of inert solvents takes place quickly and selectively with preferential cleavage of S-S bond in the ester. In nonpolar carbon tetrachloride this is the only direction of the bond cleavage, while in a polar solvent (nitrobenzene) it is the preferred direction together with cleavage of the C-S bond.
