Structure and Conformation of 3-Substituted 8-Aza-2-oxabicyclooctan-7-ones

The 1H NMR spectra of 3-substituted 8-aza-2-oxabicyclooctan-7-ones have been recorded.With the use of coupling constants between ring protons, the conformational preference of this bicyclic system has been discussed.It is found that the four-membered β-lactam ring fused to the tetrahydropyran molecule prefers the conformation having unshared electron pairs at the ring oxygen atom gauche to the polar C1-N bond.
