1304-54-7 Usage

Description

Triberyllium nitride, with the molecular formula Be3N2 and a molecular weight of 55.0652 g/mol, is a white to yellow powder that can be prepared from the elements at high temperatures (1100–1500 °C). It has a density of 2.71 g/cm3, a melting point of 2208 °C, and a boiling point of 2240 °C. Triberyllium nitride is a hard, refractory material that decomposes in vacuum into beryllium and nitrogen. It is soluble in water and readily hydrolyzed, forming beryllium hydroxide and ammonia. It exists in two polymorphic forms: gray cubic crystal a-Be3N2 with a defect anti-bixbyite structure and hexagonal β-Be3N2.

Uses

Used in Radioisotope Production:
Triberyllium nitride is used as a precursor in the production of the radioactive carbon isotope 14C for tracer applications. Its ability to decompose in vacuum into beryllium and nitrogen makes it a suitable candidate for this purpose.
Used in Refractory and High-Temperature Applications:
Due to its high melting point of 2208 °C and its hard, refractory nature, triberyllium nitride can be used in various high-temperature applications where materials with excellent thermal stability are required.
Used in Chemical Industry:
Triberyllium nitride's reactivity with strong alkali solutions, liberating ammonia, makes it useful in the chemical industry for various processes that require the release of ammonia or the use of strong alkali solutions.
Used in Material Science Research:
The unique properties of triberyllium nitride, such as its polymorphic forms and its ability to decompose in vacuum, make it an interesting material for research in material science, where new materials with specific properties are constantly being explored.

Preparation

Beryllium nitride may be prepared by heating beryllium metal powder with dry nitrogen in an oxygen-free atmosphere above 700°C. 3Be + N2→Be3N2

Hazard

Chronic inhalation of the powder can cause cancer and adverse reproductive effects.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 1304-54-7 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 1,3,0 and 4 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 5 and 4 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 1304-54:
(6*1)+(5*3)+(4*0)+(3*4)+(2*5)+(1*4)=47
47 % 10 = 7
So 1304-54-7 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
