Isomeric mono(o-, m-, p-cyanophenyl)triphenylporphyrins were synthesized by the condensation of a mixture of aldehydes (benzaldehyde-cyanobenzaldehyde, 4:1) with pyrrole in xylene in the presence of monochloroactic acid.Reduction of the para and meta isomers of the zinc complex of cyanoporphyrin with sodium triethoxyaluminohydride in THF and of the ortho isomer by aluminum hydride gives the corresponding formyl derivatives.
