Description
Niobium oxide, also known as niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5), is a white crystalline powder with a density of 4.60 g/cm3. It melts at 1,512°C and is insoluble in water, but soluble in hydrofluoric acid. Niobium pentoxide is used in various industries due to its unique properties, such as increasing the refractive index of optical glasses and enhancing the capacity of multi-layered ceramic capacitors.

Niobium pentoxide is used as a precursor to lithium niobate, which finds extensive use in piezoelectric sensors, anti-aliasing filters, optical waveguides, mobile phones, surface acoustic devices, and optical modulators, including linear and non-linear optical applications. It is also used in the production of multi-layered ceramic capacitors with high capacity and for the preparation of electroacoustic or electrooptical components such as LiNbO3 and KNbO3 or ferroelectric ceramics like Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3.

Preparation
Niobium pentoxide is produced as an intermediate during recovery of Nb metal from ores (See niobium). Also, the pentoxide may be produced by igniting niobium metal powder, niobium carbide, or niobium fluoride in oxygen.
