Trichloro-niobium(V) and -tantalum(V) bis-dialkyl dithiophosphates, Cl3M2/2 (where M=Nb or Ta; R=Prn, Pri, Bui and Ph) have been synthesized by stoichiometric reactions of the metal(V) chlorides with sodium/ammonium salts of dialkyl dithiophosphoric acids. The complexes are orange/yellow viscous liquids, soluble in polar organic solvents. These have been characterized by elemental analysis and spectral studies such as IR and NMR (1H, 13C and 31P).A seven-coordinated structure has been suggested for these compounds.
