The nature of carbocationic species (C//1//4H//2//3** plus ) related to the 2-tert-butyl-2-adamantyl cation has been explored by trapping and isotope-labeling experiments and by spectroscopic studies under stable ion conditions. The results of these experiments clearly establish that a manifold of interconverting isomeric ions and hydrocarbons exists which originates from the 2-tert-butyl-2-adamantyl system. Refs.
