13477-10-6 Usage

Description

Barium hypochlorite, with the chemical formula Ba(ClO)2 and a molecular weight of 240.234 g/mol, is a white-colored crystalline solid that is denser than water. It has the CAS number 13477-10-6. Barium hypochlorite can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes upon contact and may be toxic if ingested. It has the potential to accelerate the burning of combustible materials and can explode when exposed to heat or flames for an extended period. Barium hypochlorite. reacts with acids, releasing chlorine gas, which is irritating, corrosive, and toxic. It also reacts violently with cyanides when heated or subjected to friction and can form explosive mixtures with combustible materials, powdered metals, or ammonium compounds. Barium hypochlorite is not commercially available and information on its uses, physical, and chemical properties is not readily found in scientific literature.

Uses

1. Used in Chemical Synthesis:
Barium hypochlorite is used as a reagent in the chemical synthesis of various compounds due to its ability to accelerate the burning of combustible materials and its reactive nature with acids.
2. Used in Fire Safety:
Although it can accelerate the burning of combustible materials, barium hypochlorite can also be used in fire safety applications to understand the behavior of materials in the presence of heat or flames, helping to develop strategies to prevent explosions and improve safety measures.
3. Used in Research and Development:
Barium hypochlorite can be utilized in research and development for studying its reactions with various substances, such as acids, cyanides, and combustible materials, to better understand its properties and potential applications in various industries.
Please note that due to the hazardous nature of barium hypochlorite, its uses are limited and should be handled with extreme caution. The information provided is based on the given materials and should not be considered as a comprehensive guide to the uses of barium hypochlorite.

Air & Water Reactions

Soluble in water.

Reactivity Profile

Salts of hypochlorous acid, HClO. Generally toxic, irritants and powerful oxidizers, particularly in the presence of water or at higher temperature as they decompose to release oxygen and chlorine gases. On contact with urea they form the highly explosive NCl3 . When heated or on contact with acids, they produce highly toxic fumes of chlorine gas [Sax, 9th ed., 1996, p. 1905].

Health Hazard

Toxic by ingestion. Inhalation of dust is toxic. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Contact with substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.

Fire Hazard

These substances will accelerate burning when involved in a fire. May explode from heat or contamination. Some may burn rapidly. Some will react explosively with hydrocarbons (fuels). May ignite combustibles (wood, paper, oil, clothing, etc.). Containers may explode when heated. Runoff may create fire or explosion hazard.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 13477-10-6 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 1,3,4,7 and 7 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 1 and 0 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 13477-10:
(7*1)+(6*3)+(5*4)+(4*7)+(3*7)+(2*1)+(1*0)=96
96 % 10 = 6
So 13477-10-6 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
