Hydrogen chloride has an appreciable effect on the reactivity of acyltriptycenes in acetylation and formylation reactions.Either activation or passivation of the triptycene is observed, depending on the amount of hydrogen chloride.By studying the relationships governing this effect it was possible to improve the procedures for the synthesis of triacyl- and triformyltriptycenes significantly.
