5-Azodiazomethanotetrazole hydrate was isolated for the first time by the treatment of a disodium salt of azotetrazole with dilute inorganic and organic acids (H2SO4, HNO3, HCl, HC(NO2)3, HCOOH).Contrary to this, during the decomposition of an azotetrazole salt in more concentrated acids, the corresponding salts of 5-hydrazinotetrazole are formed. It was shown that 5-hydrazinotetrazole is formed via the intermediate 5-azodiazomethanotetrazole; a mechanism has been proposed for these reactions. On treating of 5-hydrazinotetrazole with acetone and formaldehyde, the corresponding hydrazone are formed, whereby the hydrazone formed in the last case subsequently copolymerizes with formaldehyde.
