149-29-1 Usage

Description

Patulin (PAT) is a mycotoxin primarily produced by certain species of Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Byssochlamys. It is predominantly found in ripe apple and apple products. Patulin is a furopyran and lactone with antibiotic properties, but it has also been shown to be carcinogenic and mutagenic. It inhibits protein prenylation, K1-uptake into erythrocytes, and various forms of Na1/K1-ATPase.

Uses

Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
Patulin is used as an inhibitor of protein prenylation for its potential role in the development of novel therapeutic strategies against various diseases. Its ability to inhibit protein prenylation can be exploited in the design of drugs targeting specific cellular pathways.
Used in Food Industry:
Patulin is used as a monitoring agent for the presence of mycotoxins in the food supply, particularly in apple and apple products. Its detection and control are essential to ensure food safety and prevent potential health risks associated with its consumption.
Used in Research and Development:
Patulin is used as a tool in scientific research to study the effects of mycotoxins on cellular processes and to develop methods for their detection and mitigation. Its properties as an inhibitor of various cellular functions make it a valuable compound for understanding the mechanisms of mycotoxin action and developing countermeasures.

Purification Methods

Crystallise patulin from *C6H6, Et2O, EtOH or chloroform. It sublimes at 90o/high vacuum [Bergel et al. J Chem Soc 415 1944]. [Beilstein 18 III/IV 1184, 18/3 V 5.] (Highly TOXIC).

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 149-29-1 includes 6 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 3 digits, 1,4 and 9 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 2 and 9 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 149-29:
(5*1)+(4*4)+(3*9)+(2*2)+(1*9)=61
61 % 10 = 1
So 149-29-1 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
