Description

Lead 2,4,6-trinitro-m-phenylene dioxide is an explosive compound that exists as hexagonal platelets, with its color ranging from yellow to brown. It is derived from styphnic acid and is known for its sensitivity to fire and static electricity. However, it does not react with metals and is less sensitive to shock and friction. lead 2,4,6-trinitro-m-phenylene dioxide is only slightly soluble in water and methyl alcohol, and it remains stable in storage even at elevated temperatures.
Usage:
Used in Explosive Industry:
Lead 2,4,6-trinitro-m-phenylene dioxide is used as an initiating explosive for its ability to detonate less sensitive secondary explosives. Its application is primarily due to its sensitivity to fire and static electricity, making it a suitable compound for primers and detonator mixtures.
Used in Automotive Industry (Historic Reference):
Although not directly related to lead 2,4,6-trinitro-m-phenylene dioxide, it is worth mentioning the use of another lead compound, tetraethyl lead (TEL), which was historically used in the automotive industry to improve the efficiency and performance of internal combustion engines. TEL, as an additive to gasoline, allowed for increased octane ratings and engine compression, thus boosting power and fuel economy. However, its use has been largely discontinued due to the toxicity of lead and its negative impact on catalytic converters.

Reactivity Profile

LEAD STYPHNATE is a weak but highly sensitive explosive. An employee removing a beaker of lead styphnate from a laboratory oven caused a detonation when he bumped the beaker on the side of the oven [MCA Case History 957, 1966]. Three kilograms of lead styphnate exploded from an unknown cause. Wet material in two adjacent dry rooms did not detonate [Chem. Abs. 26:5210. 1932]. May react vigorously with reducing agents.

Health Hazard

Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases.

Fire Hazard

MAY EXPLODE AND THROW FRAGMENTS 1600 meters (1 MILE) OR MORE IF FIRE REACHES CARGO.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 15245-44-0 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 1,5,2,4 and 5 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 4 and 4 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 15245-44:
(7*1)+(6*5)+(5*2)+(4*4)+(3*5)+(2*4)+(1*4)=90
90 % 10 = 0
So 15245-44-0 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
