Synthesis of novel 2,4-diarylchromans

Synthesis of the title compounds has been achieved by Grignard reaction on 7-methoxyflavone (1) with appropriate aryl halides and subsequent hydrogenation. 4-(p-Hydroxyphenyl)-7-methoxy-2-phenylchroman (6), thus prepared, is converted into the corresponding alkyl ethers (7a,b) and esters (7c,d).None of the compounds shows estrogenic, antiestrogenic or antifertility activity.
