Tricarbonyl(vinylketene)iron(0) complex 1 underwent reaction with a variety of imines to produce η3-allyl-η1-alkyl iron complexes 4-7, resulting from insertion of the imine into an iron-acyl carbonyl bond. Complex 4 was characterized by X-ray crystallography, confirming the proposed structure: monoclinic, space group P21/n, a = 11.098(2) A?, b = 9.837(2) A?, c = 16.531(3) A?, β = 108.67(3) A?, Z = 4, R = 0.0443, and Rw = 0.0669 for the 2862 reflections observed. Oxidative degradation of these complexes with I2/Me3NO produced 2-pyridones or unsaturated δ-lactams, along with minor amounts of β-lactams.
