The reactions of a series of alkyl- and arylphosphines, -arsines, or -stibines with a variety of halo- and haloalkyl- (or haloaryl-) phosphines, -arsines, or -stibines have been studied. It has been shown that in most instances the formation of adducts of the general formula RnMX3-n·yM′R′3 occurs and that in many instances these adducts decompose to give M-M bonded compounds plus R′3M′X2. It was further shown by electrical conductance and proton magnetic resonance data that a number of these adducts are ionic in solution.
