Bis-copper(II) complexes of o-quinone monophenylhydrazones (2a-e) react with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate.Probably through a Michael reaction followed by intramolecular cyclization, o-benzoquinone derivatives 2a,b give indazoles 5a,b, also synthesized by a new route from isatines.Naphtho- and phenanthroquinone derivatives 2c-e are oxidized by copper(II) ions to ketocarbenes which undergo 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition to benzofuran derivatives 11c-e.
