Dimethyl chloroterephthalate (DMCT) is a chemical compound derived from terephthalic acid, widely used in the production of polymers, most notably polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It is primarily used in the manufacturing of plastic bottles, containers and films. DMCT is classified as an ester, which means it contains a carbonyl adjacent to an ether functional group. It's a white crystalline powder with the molecular formula C10H8Cl2O4. It is quite stable under normal temperatures and pressures, but it can decompose under high heat to emit toxic fumes of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen chloride and other chlorinated compounds.
