After more than 30 years of speculation on the mechanism of the isomerization of icosahedral carboranes and their analogues, isolation of 1- provides the first clue. This intermediate has an unprecendented, dosed, nonicosahedral structure. [Mo] = [Mo(η3-C3H5)CO)2].
