A novel characterization of the structure of 'Cossa's salt' Kx(NH4)1-x[PtCl3NH3] · H2O by crystallographic comparison with the stoichiometric compounds K[PtCl3NH3] · H2O and NH4 [PtCl3NH3] · H2O
Oksanen, Anneli
, p. 53 - 60 (1997)
The present understanding of 'Cossa's salt' with two crystalline forms in single crystals, which describes the yellow parts of the crystal as the pure compound K[PtCl3NH3] · H2O and the red parts as K[PtCl3NH3]1-ω[PtCl5NH 3]ω (0 A more obvious explanation is that 'Cossa's salt' forms mixed-occupancy crystalline material Kx(NH4)1-x[PtCl3NH3] · H2O containing mixed counter ions with different composition of the K+ and NH4+ ions. A sample of the 'red' form with x ≈ 0.25 (2) and the 'yellow' form with x ≈ 0.75 (3) are compared with the stoichiometric compounds NH4[PtCl3NH3] · H2O, (1) published earlier, and K[PtCl3NH3] · H2O (4). The unit cell volumes decrease with increasing concentration of K+ ion, being 825.2(3) A3 for (1), 813(1) A3 for (2), 786.6(8) A3 for (3), and 774.2(8) A3 for (4).
