20770-41-6 Usage

Description

Potassium phosphide is a white crystalline or powdered solid that is highly reactive when exposed to water, potentially causing a violent reaction and even starting a fire. It is toxic through ingestion, inhalation, and skin absorption.

Uses

Used in Chemical Synthesis:
Potassium phosphide is utilized as a chemical intermediate for the production of various chemicals. Its reactivity and unique properties make it a valuable component in the synthesis of different compounds.
Used in Pest Control:
Potassium phosphide is also used as a pesticide, particularly for rodent control. Its toxicity makes it effective in eliminating pests, but it also requires careful handling and storage due to its hazardous nature.
Used in Research and Development:
Due to its unique chemical properties and reactivity, potassium phosphide is employed in research and development for exploring new chemical reactions and creating novel compounds with potential applications in various industries.

Air & Water Reactions

Decomposed by water or moisture in air evolving toxic phosphine which often ignites [NFPA 1991].

Reactivity Profile

Potassium phosphide is a reducing agent. They slowly generate flammable or noxious gases in contact with water. Phosphides react quickly upon contact with moisture or acids to give the very toxic gas phosphine; phosphides also can react vigorously with oxidizing materials. In general, materials in this group are incompatible with oxidizers such as atmospheric oxygen. They are violently incompatible with acids, particularly oxidizing acids.

Health Hazard

Highly toxic: contact with water produces toxic gas, may be fatal if inhaled. Inhalation or contact with vapors, substance or decomposition products may cause severe injury or death. May produce corrosive solutions on contact with water. Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control may cause pollution.

Fire Hazard

Produce flammable and toxic gases on contact with water. May ignite on contact with water or moist air. Some react vigorously or explosively on contact with water. May be ignited by heat, sparks or flames. May re-ignite after fire is extinguished. Some are transported in highly flammable liquids. Containers may explode when heated. Runoff may create fire or explosion hazard.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 20770-41-6 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 2,0,7,7 and 0 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 4 and 1 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 20770-41:
(7*2)+(6*0)+(5*7)+(4*7)+(3*0)+(2*4)+(1*1)=86
86 % 10 = 6
So 20770-41-6 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
