Description
3-amino-7-(dimethylamino)-5-phenylphenazinium chloride is a red light purple dye that is soluble in cold and hot water, producing a red color. It is also easily soluble in ethanol, resulting in a purple color, and in soluble fiber elements. When treated with strong sulfuric acid, it turns green, and when diluted, it turns blue to purple. The dye solution forms a light brown red precipitate when mixed with sodium hydroxide.

3-amino-7-(dimethylamino)-5-phenylphenazinium chloride is used as a dye for cotton fabrics. It is known for its light fastness, perspiration fastness, ironing fastness, and soaping properties. It has a rating of A for light fastness, 2 for perspiration fastness, 2-3 for ironing fastness, and 3 for soaping. It also has a rating of 2 for fading and staining resistance.
Preparation
(a) N1,N1-dimethylbenzene-1,4-diamine and a mixture of aniline oxidation, then converted to the chloride; (b) N,N-dimethyl-4-nitrosobenzenamine?and N1-phenylbenzene-1,3-diamine?heating.
