Description
Diisodecyl phthalate, a colorless liquid, is a phthalate ester and a diester. It may float or sink in water and is widely used as a plasticizer for various applications.
Uses
Used in Plastics Industry:
Diisodecyl phthalate is used as a plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride in calendered film, coated fabrics, building wire jackets, wire and cable extrusion, and other applications. It enhances the flexibility, workability, and durability of plastic materials.
Used in Soft Drinks Industry:
Diisodecyl phthalate has been detected in soft drinks, where it may be used to improve the texture or stability of the beverages.
Used in Pharmaceuticals Industry:
In the pharmaceuticals industry, Diisodecyl phthalate may be used in the production of certain medications, potentially enhancing their effectiveness or improving their physical properties.
Used in Food Products Industry:
Diisodecyl phthalate has also been detected in food products, where it could be utilized to improve the texture, stability, or other characteristics of the food items.
Preparation
Diisodecyl phthalate is prepared from propylene and butenes through an oligomerisation process forming hydrocarbons with 8 to 15 carbon atoms. After distillation (in view of obtaining nonene), oxonation forms aldehydes with one more carbon atom ("isodecanal"). The latter are hydrogenated and distilled to form monohydric alcohols (mainly C10). These are reacted with phthalic anhydride (PA). The first reaction step, alcoholysis of PA to give the monoester, is rapid and goes to completion. By charging in excess alcohol and by removing the water which is formed, the equilibrium can be shifted almost completely towards the products side.
Air & Water Reactions
bis(8-methylnonyl) phthalate is insoluble in water.
Reactivity Profile
bis(8-methylnonyl) phthalate is an ester. Esters react with acids to liberate heat along with alcohols and acids. Strong oxidizing acids may cause a vigorous reaction that is sufficiently exothermic to ignite the reaction products. Heat is also generated by the interaction of esters with caustic solutions. Flammable hydrogen is generated by mixing esters with alkali metals and hydrides. Can generate electrostatic charges. [Handling Chemicals Safely 1980. p. 250].
Health Hazard
No symptoms reported for any rate of exposure.
Fire Hazard
bis(8-methylnonyl) phthalate is combustible.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 26761-40-0 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 2,6,7,6 and 1 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 4 and 0 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 26761-40:
(7*2)+(6*6)+(5*7)+(4*6)+(3*1)+(2*4)+(1*0)=120
120 % 10 = 0
So 26761-40-0 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
